Dudhsagar — literally meaning "Sea of Milk" in Konkani (Dudh = milk, Sagar = sea) — is a four-tiered cascade on the Mandovi River, sitting on the border of Goa and Karnataka within the Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary, Sanguem Taluka. At 310 metres tall, it ranks as India's fifth tallest waterfall and 227th in the world.
What makes Dudhsagar iconic is the milky-white water pounding down sheer rock faces with such force it looks like spilled milk. Add the jaw-dropping visual of a train crossing the old stone viaduct right in front of the falls — famously featured in Bollywood — and you have one of the most photographed waterfalls in the subcontinent. Also commonly spelled Doodhsagar — same waterfall, different transliteration.
Dudhsagar straddles two states — your starting point determines your transport options. Here's every route broken down clearly.
There are two main trekking approaches to Dudhsagar. One is fully legal; one is illegal and risky. Know the difference before you plan.
Trekking Dudhsagar is government-regulated. You need a permit, a licensed guide, and valid ID. Book early — peak season (Nov–Jan) slots fill up fast.

Every season at Dudhsagar offers a completely different experience. Your ideal window depends on whether you want the falls at full force, safe easy trails, or lush monsoon drama.
Pack light but never compromise on the essentials. The trail has no shops, no lockers, and limited phone network — you get what you carry.
Dudhsagar is inside a protected wildlife sanctuary. These rules are non-negotiable — follow them for your own safety and to keep this place accessible for future visitors.
Dudhsagar is one of India's most rewarding treks for the price. A DIY day trip costs ₹500–₹1,500 per person all-in. Packages with spice farm lunch push up to ₹2,500–₹3,000.
